Calendula
$21.00
Energetics
Warm, dry, mildly bitter and pungent.
Constitutional Fit (Ayurveda)
Balances Kapha and Pitta — its gentle warmth moves stagnant Kapha, while its bitter, alterative action on the blood soothes aggravated Pitta at the skin and mucous membrane level. Used cautiously with Vata, since its drying nature can aggravate an already-dry constitution in excess.
TCM Pattern
Moves stagnant Qi and Blood at the surface (skin, lymph), while clearing Damp-Heat in cases of inflamed, weeping, or infected tissue.
Tissue States
- Western (Matthew Wood): Indicated for Lax and Damp tissue at the surface — a classic vulnerary, toning and healing broken or inflamed tissue while drying excess moisture.
- Ayurvedic (Dhatu): Acts on Rasa and Mamsa (plasma and muscle/flesh tissue), supporting tissue repair at the surface level.
Safety Notes
Calendula should not be taken internally during pregnancy, due to its affinity for the uterus and its downward-moving action as an emmenagogue, acting to stimulate delayed menses.
Calendula belongs to the Aster family (Asteraceae). A small percentage of individuals sensitive to ragweed, chamomile, or daisies may experience contact dermatitis.
Summary
A warm, gently drying remedy for tissue that has been broken, inflamed, or is slow to heal. Calendula's affinity for the skin and lymphatic system makes it a first-reach herb for wounds, rashes, and swollen glands — moving stagnant fluid while actively supporting new tissue growth.
