Energetics
Cool-leaning, drying, bitter and pungent, with a diffusive quality.
Constitutional Fit (Ayurveda)
Pacifies Pitta through its bitter, cooling action, while its diffusive, dispersing nature can aggravate Vata if used to excess. Neutral to mildly reducing for Kapha, since it moves stagnation rather than adding to it.
TCM Pattern
Invigorates the Blood and clears Heat, while also serving as an astringent to check excessive flow — a dual-direction herb, equally suited to moving what's stagnant and steadying what's leaking.
Tissue States
- Western (Matthew Wood): Indicated for both Excited and Lax tissue — classically used to cool a hot, excited fever pattern (as a diaphoretic) while also astringing lax, over-flowing tissue (excessive bleeding, secretions).
- Ayurvedic (Dhatu): Acts on Rakta (blood), supporting healthy circulation while checking excess flow.
Suggested Use
Shake well. Take 20–30 drops in water, up to three times daily, or as directed by your practitioner.
Summary
A bitter, cooling herb known for working in two directions at once — moving stagnant heat outward through the skin while astringing and steadying tissue that has become too lax or free-flowing. A classic herb for fevers, cycles, and wounds alike.
